Baby's First Year - What to Expect

As a new Mom, you are probably wondering about many things: how will he react to his new surroundings? when will she sleep for more than 2 hours? what can I expect in the following year? an so many other questions.....

Each baby is different. Your baby's rate of growth, appearance, and personality, will all be unique to him or her. As you embark on this journey with your new baby, take time to enjoy their presence in your life.

Here are some of the milestones to watch for in the first year of your baby's development:

Newborn stage

You have just brought your baby home from the hospital to his or her newly decorated nursery, and we are sure you are very excited. In these early days, your baby may have a pointy head from the delivery process, or jaundice - yellow eyes and skin tone. These things are perfectly normal, and should go away in a few days. It is important to cuddle and love your child as much as possible now, as this is when mother/child bonding begins. Breast-feeding is very important to your child's health both now and in later years. Newborn babies often sleep 10-12 hours per day, but will wake every 4 hours or so for feeding.

From 1 - 3 Months

Babies will begin moving more, discovering their hands, and making little sounds. They will smile now, and follow the sound of your voice as you move through their room. Babies love seeing their faces in a mirror now, and the addition of a brightly colored, baby-safe mobile in their cribs will provide them with great entertainment and stimulation. Babies can now lift their heads, move them from side-to-side, and focus on objects that are 8-12 away.

From 3-6 months

This is one of the most exciting times in your baby's growth; many changes appear in this period. At the end of the third month, your baby will be opening and closing his little hands, holding his head up with control, reaching more and more for objects, and imitating sounds. In the fourth month, he can usually sit up with some help and is probably sleeping six hours at a stretch. It will become clearer that he or she recognizes familiar faces, and will coo and show how happy he is to see you when you enter the nursery! In the fifth and sixth months, your baby will be rolling over, making two syllable sounds and drinking from a cup. You will also be introducing solid baby foods at this time. Now is the time to baby proof the house, as your baby may be crawling during this period as well.

From 6-9 months

During this high growth period, many babies say their first words. Even if they don't yet start talking, most begin enthusiastically babbling to themselves and develop a much wider range of facial expressions at this age. He or she will have developed specific cries for specific needs now, and will react differently to different family members. Babies in the seventh and eighth months will start to feed themselves basic finger foods, and will enjoy throwing food or dropping it on the floor to see what happens! A cuddly blanket or bear may become a favorite item now, and your baby may be stressed when separated from it. Baby will now sit unsupported too.

From 9-10 months

During this month, baby will reach for toys, try to grab the spoon during feedings, and in general, become quite a bit more active. He or she will be waving goodbye to the delight of the grandparents, will be able to pick up things using opposable thumbs, and will also start to look for things that have been dropped, like favorite toys. She will also be able to move from crawling to a sitting position, and will be quite mobile!

From 11-12 months

Baby is much more curious now, and responds well to new sounds, colors and shapes. Story time is much appreciated, and he or she will enjoy cuddling on your lab while being read to. Babies now understand and can mimic simple gestures, and can say simple words. Before turning one, your baby should enjoy stacking objects, and filling and emptying containers. Short play sessions with other children are a good idea now, and can teach baby a great deal about sharing and other social skills.

Babies are a wonderful reminder of how precious life is!

Enjoy your child's first year of life - it will go by quickly.

Baby's Naptime

Getting a good naptime routine established is very important. Babies need a lot of sleep, and if they're not getting enough of it, they get tired and irritable very easily. Unfortunately, the more tired and irritable they get, the harder it can be to settle them for a nap.

When a baby is still young, regular sleep patterns are closely linked to regular eating patterns, so it's good to look at what is considered "average" for the early stages of a baby's life. Remember, not all babies will adhere to these averages, and if your baby is vastly different, it may be worth discussing with your health professional.

Newborn - your newborn baby will be asleep for anywhere from 16 to 20 hours in a day. This includes naps taken between feeds. It's good to try and keep baby awake for a little while after a feed, so baby doesn't get into the habit of needing a feed to drop off to sleep. Once baby has been awake a little while, it's naptime, before baby gets overstimulated and wide awake.

2 Months Old - now baby is a little older, it's good to try and give him the opportunity to self-soothe during nap and bedtimes. It's quite normal for your baby to cry a little when first put into their crib or cot, but that's okay. Allow the crying to continue for a short while, say 10 minutes (unless you can hear baby is getting hysterical or distressed), then go and check on him. Resist the temptation to pick baby up, but pat his bottom, stroke his head and speak soothingly, or lightly rub his back until he is calm again.

3-6 Months Old - this is the age at which the amount of sleep required during the day starts to diminish. Baby will often drop one naptime without any prompting from you. Usually this is the late afternoon or third nap of the day. Sometimes baby will be a little grumpy to begin with, and may still want a short nap, but try to keep him awake and happy. This will help baby to go to bed at a reasonable time and sleep through the night.

Over 16 months - by now most infants have dropped their morning nap as well, and are perhaps having a longer afternoon nap to compensate. Most babies now sleep 10-12 hours a night, and their afternoon naptime lasts for 2-3 hours.

If you find baby isn't napping very well in the early months of life, you might need to cut back on awake time by 15 minutes increments. If baby is getting overstimulated and highly awake, then he will fight sleep and naptime becomes a struggle. Be alert for "tired" cues, like rubbing the eyes, and immediately act on them.

It's also important to give baby a chance to settle down to sleep by himself. Some people believe that their baby will be harmed if he cries, but most babies fuss or cry a little when first put to bed. It's important to give baby the opportunity to work out for himself how to relax and go to sleep. Many babies will start thumb sucking or use a dummy; others find a mobile hanging above the cot fascinating enough to stop crying and go to sleep. It's vital that baby learns this skill of self-soothing, or else you and baby will be having interrupted nights for what will seem like forever to the sleep deprived parent. Self-soothing is a skill, and like most skills, it is learned through practice.

Naturally if your baby is getting very distressed or worked up, you need to enter the room and help baby relax again. But try to avoid picking baby up or in any way disturbing the sleep environment. Leave baby in the bed and pat, stroke, or talk to baby until he settles down.

You need to be alert to baby's cues when setting naptime, but it's also good to have a routine. So you determine when naptime needs to start, and stick to the same time as often as you can. Babies generally relate well to routines, and will settle quickly.

When baby is older, too, he may wake up crying long before naptime is finished. This could be because of a dirty diaper, being uncomfortable either in position or temperature, or something disturbed him. Fix the problem and encourage baby to go back to sleep. Babies that have had enough sleep usually wake up happy, talking, and generally in a good mood.

Establishing good naptime routines is essential, both for you as a parent, and for your baby. Use a combination of cues from your baby and established routines, to make sure both you and baby get sufficient sleep.

How Do I Ease My Baby's Discomfort While Teething?

Babies usually grow their first few teeth between 4- 7 months. Their teeth will continue to grow out until about 3 years of age or when they have completed the set of 20 milk teeth. Babies usually experience discomfort during teething especially during the growth of the first few teeth at the bottom gums. During this period, babies may loose their appetite, drool excessively and chew on their hands, toys and practically everything they get their hands on.

Parents should not fret when their babies start chewing on their toys because this helps the teeth break out to the surface. During this period, you must make sure that the baby's hands are clean and the toys surrounding him/ her have passed the highest safety standards.

To help ease your baby's discomfort, make sure to get him/her a teething toy that is easy to chew on but won't break even when your baby chews or pulls excessively on it. Some babies find comfort in using pacifiers. If you decide to let your daughter use a pacifier, make sure it comes in a single-piece to prevent choking. Pacifiers with separate parts may cause choking because of detachable parts. Still there are many babies that need varying textures to satisfy the need to chew.

You can get them specially designed teething toys that come in different sizes. You can also buy a good teething toy that has different shapes, texture and sizes incorporated into the toy so that the baby will find which part of the toy it is most fun and comfortable to chomp on. There are plenty of babies who can be fussy when they are teething and many of them easily gets bored with simple rubber teethes.

The Baby Whoozit Touch and Teethe Ring is a good teething toy because it is a fun and educational toy and a teething toy at the same time. The Baby Whoozit Touch and Teethe Ring comes in bright colors. The center of the toy is surrounded by soft teething material with different textures and various colorful beads. The toy was designed to offer a fun distraction to the baby's discomfort. It is very easy to grip and has various shapes and textures that most babies love. The toy also encourages play and discovery and helps develop eye-hand coordination and the baby's motor skills. You can purchase the toy even if your baby is not teething yet because as a toy, it already offers a lot of value. The toy includes fun sounds, rings, a squeaker and a mirror.

Whatever teething toy you choose to purchase for your baby, just make sure you check that the toy is safe. You can also help ease your baby's discomfort by rubbing his/her gums and by using special teething gels. Most of the time, you wouldn't really have a need for over-the-counter teething gels or other special methods to ease pain because a soft but sturdy teething toy is usually enough to ease your baby's discomfort during teething.

Baby Gender Prediction - Want to Predict Your Next Baby's Gender?

Is it possible to predict baby gender? In this article I'm going to share some of the ways of determining baby gender, both pre-conception and/or after conception.

You could go to a fertility clinic, but you will get no guarantee of success and could very easily spend thousands of dollars! I don't know about you but I don't have a big wad of money to give away. So, are there some other, less expensive alternatives?

Let's start with the Shettles Method as your baby predictor. This baby sex prediction method is based on the fact that the father's sperm is the deciding factor in whether a baby girl or boy baby is conceived.

The sperm that will create a boy baby is physically smaller, weaker, but faster than the "girl" sperm. By taking advantage of these differences Dr. Shettles realized you could actually give an advantage to one sperm over the other and often result in the baby boy or girl you wanted.

Dr. Shettles came up with a simple, at home three step system of baby gender selection many years ago, but his methods have withstood the test of time and are still very popular today!

You could opt for the Chinese Lunar Calendar Baby Predictor, which has been predicting baby's sex for centuries. Many in China and throughout the far eastern countries have a lot of faith in it's accuracy (up to 99%.) Here in the west we tend to be a little more skeptical. The Chinese Lunar Calendar Baby Predictor is said to be able to predict a baby's gender either before or after conception, but I'll let you be the judge.

Then of course there are The Old Wives Tales for baby gender prediction. Some of these old wives tales gender predictors seem a little outlandish (the "Drano" prediction method for example) but I would think some would have a basis in fact. Again I'll let you be the judge on the accuracy of these gender predictors as well.

Both the Chinese Lunar Calendar Baby Predictor and The Old Wives Tales can be a whole lot of fun to experiment with at your next baby shower if nothing else.

If you are pregnant now and want to know the sex of your unborn baby, you could find out by way of ultrasound in your 4th or 5th month. Or if your are scheduled for either a Amniocentesis, or Chorionic Villus Sampling or CVS test you can find out your baby's gender with a 99% accuracy! These tests are pretty invasive though, and won't be preformed just to predict baby gender.

It's been said that over 70% of couples world-wide would choose the gender of their babies pre-conception if they only could, if you fall within this group, you might try looking into the Shettles Methods, which it's believed can increase your chances of success from the normal 50/50 to over 95%!

The most important thing to always keep in mind is, regardless of whether you are successful in your gender predicting efforts or not, your new baby should be wanted and loved even if it is of the "other" gender. Gender disappointment is real and should not be taken lightly, don't allow yourself to succumb to it!

Baby's Baptism Little Angels

For the baby baptism to be valid, there must be a lists of guests that consists of close relatives and friends so that the whole arena can be filled with the feeling of firm love. According to tradition, the parents should prepare small tokens of appreciation for the guests to show you appreciate them spending their time here. In terms of choosing baptism gifts, people normally have a general idea on what to choose. The normal gifts people would buy for baptism guests favors would include items that resembles or represent the religion of Christianity. The normal favors would include items such as the Holy Cross, scent candles, figures resembling angels, and also the bible. In the market of baptism favors there have always been a line of the same products so by innovating and creating some new ideas for the gifts would surely be refreshing for the guests. If there is trouble thinking of some new gifts there is no need to worry because i will be listing down some different ideas that would blast you away. The baptism gifts are only limited to your own imagination.

Applying the idea and concept of alphabetical letters in the gifts is a good idea since during the baptism ceremony one important procedure is to implement a baptism name for the baby. A gift of a manually done card with the different words from the alphabet speckled along the card would definitely leave a good impression on the guests. It might look as if it is straying away from the original concept of a baptism gift so adding in another piece of a small chain with a Holy Cross as a pendant should help. The two most important aspect to consider during the whole process is trying to match the holiness of the ceremony and the life of the newborn itself. You can also write down the name of the newborn on the gift card which will definitely help remind people of the baby's name a few years down the road.

From the verse taken from Matthew 18:3, God mentiones that in order for man to even possibly see the gates of heaven, they will need to make themselves as clean and as pure as children. Bibles have always contain readings which emphasize on the fact that young infants and toddlers are always regarded as pure. It also mentions how we use the white color to represent pureness. Therefore, we can use various symbols which represents the good points on earth such as the white dove which brings forth the thought of peace and the heart shape picture which bring upon thoughts of love. In the end the decision is mae based on personal selection and as long as the religious factor remains in the gift then it is suitable. Adding in Bible verses would definitely make the gift more suitable for the event, and its even better sounding with readings regarding infants.

If you are a person who likes to apply creativity in your daily life then you can always look for more options in the world wide web since the limitless information and knowledge floating in the internet is boundless so you will certainly find an idea that you find interesting and you think is easy for you to do. The internet is very useful and it would show you some ideas and concepts you would not have thought of yourself. Some of these concepts would include some sort of adaption of figures and characters from the holy bible and even the Holy Bible itself. Ideas would come from even the most strangest places so always be alert for it. For those parents who do not like going through the trouble of preparing gifts with lots of work then simple gifts like flower plants and other gifts from natural sources. People don't neccesarily have to spend money on the gifts since there is no law on it. Doing so would also save the parents some money. Besides the internet, it is also a good idea to look through the magazines and brochures available. If you find anything interesting then you can just order it. With customization at large today you can feel free to add in any other products that you feel will be suitable for your baptism gift collection.

If you are looking for the perfect and the best guide on how you should plan the whole ceremony then it is like looking for a needle in the haystack because there are too man around. The whole Christianity teachings are involving the act of giving and that is why people fuss about preparing the baptism favors. Even the Bible verse teaches us, it is not the gift or favor itself that matters, but the way we bring ourselves in the heart when we present the gifts.
