When Do Babies Get Teeth? The Question Every Parent Asks

When do babies get teeth? It seems like we are always anticipating the next baby milestone. After rolling over, sleeping through the night and sitting up, the next thing we anticipate is getting that first little pearly white!

When that first tooth should come in, is a common question of new parents and a somewhat difficult one to answer because the timing is different for every baby. There are certain guidelines however, and as long as your baby falls within them, there is no need for concern. Baby teeth do not always erupt in the same order either. Again, there is a general order, but your baby may decide to be different.

10 Month Babies

Altogether, there are 20 baby, or primary teeth. Usually, the first ones to come through are the two bottom middle teeth. These generally appear between 6 and 10 months of age, and are followed by the top two middle teeth and then the next two on either side.

When Do Babies Get Teeth? The Question Every Parent Asks

The eye teeth or cuspids generally appear between 16 and 22 months, but the first molars often appear before they do. Babies usually have their first molars by the age of 18 months. Second molars come last, and will not likely appear until after the age of two.

It is important to take good care of baby teeth as they are the foundation for healthy second teeth. Because baby teeth provide the space for secondary teeth, losing a baby tooth too soon can result in the second tooth coming in at an odd angle and may cause crowding of the adult teeth. Chewing difficulties and speech problems can sometimes result from early loss of baby teeth.

My best advice to new parents is to enjoy every day and every baby step along the way. While it is quite alright to wonder "when do babies get teeth?", don't let it worry you if your baby is a little slower than some others. Just relax and enjoy that toothless grin. It will be gone soon enough!

Baby Sign Language - Can My Baby Talk to Me?

Baby sign language is making parent's lives easier all over the world. Have you ever tried to soothe your crying baby and felt frustrated that you couldn't understand what she really wanted?

Well you're not alone. In fact, many parents feel the same way. It's difficult at times to know what your baby really wants, and it's not only frustrating to you, but it's frustrating for her as well when she can't communicate what she wants.
Baby sign language involves teaching your baby basic sign language that will help them to communicate their needs, but you may be wondering - can your baby really communicate in this way?

According to new studies, baby sign language is actually quite effective. It all got started with a researcher, Joseph Garcia, who spent some time studying how a baby communicated with his parents who were deaf. The 10-month old was able to communicate fairly well, even at that young age, with his parents. After observing how this worked, Garcia began to promote his sign language for parents who had normal hearing.

Believe it or not, most babies actually can pick up the baby sign language rather quickly. In fact, it's easier for babies to sign at a young age than it is to talk, since they have better control over their hands at an earlier age than they do the muscles in their mouth and tongue. You can actually start teaching babies sign language when they are about six months old, although some are starting even younger. Parents have been amazed at how quickly their babies picked up on the signs.

Teaching baby to sign takes away a lot of the frustration for babies. Instead of having to scream hoping that their parents will figure out the problem, it gives them the freedom to communicate what they need, which is a huge help to both of you.

Some parents are concerned that teaching their baby to sign is going to make them develop language skills at a slower rate. Well, according to studies, this is certainly not the case. In fact, studies show that babies that are taught to sign actually start speaking more quickly. Some signing babies even show a higher IQ later in life.

Baby sign language can be easily taught to your child. There are excellent classes available that can help you to work with your baby, although some parents choose to teach their baby to sign themselves. For parents who decide to do this at home, there are many helpful resources available. You will need a baby sign language chart and an instruction book. Flash cards with pictures are another useful tool.

If you are tired and frustrated at the lack of communication between you and your baby, then baby sign language may be a great choice for you.

Making Baby Food - 10 Important Dos and Donts

If you've ever considered making baby food, there are a few things you should be aware of. Some are health related considerations, other are general tips and ideas, but all of them should help you make the best and healthiest food you can for your little baby.

Do:

10 Month Babies

1. The easiest way to start making baby food is pureeing vegetables or fruits. Simply cook them, pop into a food processor and puree. Remember that younger babies should start with thinners purees. You can get different levels of consistency by adding breast milk or formula to the food processor.

Making Baby Food - 10 Important Dos and Donts

2. The best choice for is always fresh produce. Canned or preserved food may include sodium and other unnecessary ingredients. That's the advantage making your own baby food has over commercial one. If you can't find proper fresh produce, use frozen.

3. The best way to cook baby food is by steaming it. Steaming or baking saves all the vitamins, minerals and other "goodies" inside the vegetables. Boiling them on the other hand would move them into the cooking water. In that case you can use some of this water when making the puree, so at least a part of those vitamins would go back into what the baby eats.

4. Making your own baby food can actually save you money. That's because you can make it in bulk. Storing it in the fridge is allowed for only 2-3 days, but freezing it is safe for weeks and even months. Here's a tip: scoop your puree into ice cube trays. Once it is frozen, transfer them into freezer bags and label them with the content and date. You can make baby food for the entire month!

5. Starting solid baby food should be done slowly and gradually. The baby would still be drinking breast milk or formula. There's no point in making baby food in big amounts without freezing it. That's why the ice cubes are so helpful. The baby's first meal is no more than one tablespoon of food - simply defrost a single cube. As days and weeks go by, mix and match more cubes.

Don't:

1. Babies under 6 months old should eat either breast milk or formula. It's the AAP recommendation that relies on the fact that it takes time for the baby's digestive system to develop. It's only after 4-6 months babies looses the reflex to push anything but liquid out of their mouth and can hold up their heads.

2. Homemade baby food for babies up to 12 months old should not include: cow's milk, egg white and honey. Each has a risk of either an allergic reaction, or digestive problems. Around 9 months you can start using yogurt or cooked egg yolks.

3. Don't introduce more than a single new food to your baby at a time. Instead, wait 4 days after each one and pay attention. This way you can keep track of what might cause allergies or other discomfort.

4. When defrosting food you had frozen, it is best to avoid using a microwave. Microwaves might heat up the food unevenly, leaving some of it colder and some of it so hot it can burn your baby's mouth. Either let the food defrost in room temperature or heat it up over boiling water.

5. Don't limit the baby's fat intake until he or she are 2 years old. Babies need fat as an energy source to achieve a healthy development. On the other hand, don't add sugar to when making baby food. Try to expose your baby to a variety of tastes and flavors by making other kinds of baby food besides sweet.

Baby Developmental Milestones at 19-21 Months

Your 19-month-old is becoming quite the little child. She can run well, which is both very healthy for the toddler and challenging for the caregiver who has to chase her. She should be able to feed herself with a fork and spoon with relative skill at this age. She is talking fairly well and can put together two and three word sentences. The toddler at 19-months of age can take some of her clothes off, and does so whether you want her to or not. She is also becoming more skilled at brushing her teeth, but still needs supervision. The 19-month-old is becoming able to read a situation, and can tell when something is wrong. She enjoys drawing with crayon and paper, but needs supervision not to draw on other inappropriate items such as walls. She is able to identify some body parts by pointing to them, and may be able to say the names of these body parts.

A 20-month-old toddler can take off his clothes without help. He likes to pretend with his toys, and may feed dolls or do other imitative types of playing. He also likes to pretend to help mom or caregiver doing things around the house. Now is the time for him to want to play wit that toy lawn mower or the "popcorn" vacuum cleaner and pretend to help mom and dad around the house. Once a toddler is quite good at walking and running, he may start learning language quite rapidly. Some 20-month-olds learn up to 5 new words per day. So there is no better time to interact with him with language. Sing to him, read with him, play with him and talk to him. Let him soak language up like a sponge.

10 Month Babies

The toddler who has reached the age of 21 months is a force to be aware of. She is learning language at the rate of about 10 words per day. Now is a good time for the parent or caregiver to be especially careful what they say and how they say it. If you aren't careful, you might hear some interesting language coming out of the mouth of your 21-month old that you'd really rather not hear her say. She will also absorb language from radio, TV and movies, so it is time to monitor what she sees and hears in those areas as well.

Baby Developmental Milestones at 19-21 Months

Toddlers at the age of 21 months may be able to climb up stairs. He may also enjoy building things with blocks and other stackable toys. He might be able to throw a ball overhand. Your 21-month-old is learning bladder control, so this is an optimal time to potty train if you haven't already started that process. Keep a watchful eye on this little powerhouse, because he may add the ability to open and/or close doors to his list of skills. One fun quiet time activity to add to reading time is to point to pictures of familiar things, friends or objects and have him name them. You can use a book or use a photograph album for this activity.

Introducing Solid Foods - Homemade Recipe For Babies From 4 to 8 Months

Introducing solids

How much should my baby eat?

When your baby starts consuming solid foods, (usually it happens at the age of (4) 6-8 months) you will be probably wondering how much food your baby should eat. Most of the pediatrics say that you have to give your baby as much food as he or she wants.

But you have to remember that during the period of introducing solid foods to baby's diet, breast feeding or formula is still the most important part of your baby's feeding. At the age of few moths breast milk or formula provide baby with nutritious elements.

Every baby is different and there is no chart or guideline that will show how much food your baby has to eat. In order to keep your baby healthy, you have to offer a well balanced diet of solid foods. It will help to ensure that your baby is eating the right amount of the good nutritious foods.

Here are some signs showing that baby wants to eat more or has enough of food:

Baby doesn't want to eat any more: He or she doesn't want to eat any more and is closing mouth when you try to give another spoon of food. Baby can spit the food from the mouth. Or can turn the head away.

Your baby wants to eat more: Baby is opening the mouth when the spoon is closer. Baby is leaning for the spoon or is grabbing food and trying to put it in the mouth.

Homemade baby food. Recipe for babies (4)6 -8 months

Sweet Potato
(4)6 months+

How to make sweet potato?

  1. First peel sweet potatoes and cut them into small chunks.

  2. Put chunks into a pan with some water. Put enough water to cover potatoes.

  3. Next "steam" boil potatoes until they become tender.

  4. Leave some water to use it for thinning out the sweet potatoes.

  5. Remove the skin if you baked sweet potatoes and use liquid you prefer.

  6. Put potato into bowl and puree it.

  7. Add some water or other liquid to achieve smooth consistency.

Sweet potato is a delicious food for your baby and I hope he/she liked it.

Feeding Your One Month Old Baby

Make sure your baby is ready for solid food before you give it to her. Don't rush her into eating solid food. Some babies are ready for it at four months. Some babies aren't ready until they are older. Your baby's weight or age alone does not determine her readiness for solid food.

Here are some signs to look for that will tell you if your baby is ready to try solid food:

o She holds her head steady and sits with support.

o She reaches for and shows interest in food.

o She opens her mouth when she sees food.

o She no longer thrusts her tongue out during feeding, so she's able to keep food in her mouth and swallow it.

o She turns her head away when she is full.

Most babies are ready for baby cereal when they are between four and six months of age. Ask your doctor about the best time to start your baby on solid food. Rice, oatmeal or barley cereals are OK if they are finely ground. Use them one at a time.

Mix some infant cereal with breast milk in a bowl. You can also use formula instead of breast milk. Don't use cow's milk or any other kind of milk or other liquid. Hold your baby in a sitting position or put her in a child seat on the floor (Be sure she is strapped in.) so she doesn't choke. Always use a spoon to feed solid foods to your baby.

See if your baby will take half of a very small spoonful. If she turns her head away or cries, she is not ready. Try again in a week or two.

When she is ready, she will take small, messy bites. She may roll the food around in her mouth or feel it repeatedly with her tongue. Making a mess is part of learning, so just have fun with her. At this age, your breast milk or infant formula provides all the nutrition your baby needs.

Give your baby only one new food at a time. You can then see if any one of the foods causes allergic reactions. Right now, only infant cereals are a good choice. If one of these types of cereals is a problem for her, she will vomit or get a rash. She may also have diarrhea. If this happens, call your doctor or go to your clinic.

A First Trip Abroad With A Nine Month Old Baby

Our son Luke was nine months old when we went to Pefkos on the Greek Island of Rhodes for a two week holiday, our first holiday abroad since his birth. At home he was eating three pulverised meals a day, which generally consisted of baby porridge every morning, meat and vegetables for lunch and fruit with rusk for tea. All of these were prepared by us with fresh ingredients and each meal was accompanied by a bottle of infant formula milk, with an additional bottle at bedtime.

Although we had carefully chosen our accommodation to ensure that we had a kitchenette, we knew it would not be practical to cook and prepare all of Luke's meals from fresh ingredients with only basic facilities. It would also not have been feasible to pack enough of Luke's food in our suitcases to last two weeks. We simply didn't have the space or flight weight allowance to do this. We decided to pack enough baby porridge for two weeks, as this was dried and didn't weigh a lot. We also packed a full tub of infant formula powder.

This alone took up almost one kilogram of luggage allowance! We also bought some ready-made formula milk, along with a couple of fruit pots, in the departure lounge for use during the journey.

Once in Pefkos we found that the local supermarkets offered plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. Bananas, one of Luke's favourites and an easily mashed and ready food, were widely stocked in the local supermarkets. As many of these supermarkets were open until around 10pm, this ensured that we always had an available supply of suitable food.

However, without more kitchen equipment, such as a food blender, we found it difficult to prepare many of the other fruits and vegetables to the required consistency. Many Greek resorts have quieter areas where tourist numbers are slightly lower than in the resorts' centres. We were staying at the quieter end of Pefkos, which had a few smaller supermarkets and a limited stock of baby food. But only a short walk brought us into the more tourist orientated area of Pefkos, where the slightly larger supermarkets offered a small but adequate range of both dried and pre-prepared baby food. Although we preferred to give Luke freshly cooked food, we reasoned that a bit of convenience baby food while on holiday was acceptable when facilities for preparation were so limited.

About 10 days into the holiday we realised that we would shortly be running out of baby milk formula. This was cause for concern, as we had not seen any for sale in any of the supermarkets we had visited. Upon asking one of the supermarket owners, we were directed to the local pharmacy where we were able to buy baby milk formula. It was a different brand from the one we generally use, but this didn't worry us. The pharmacist spoke excellent English and was even able to instruct us on how to mix it. We didn't visit any of the larger shops on the island as we would have needed to hire a car to get there.

Even so, we found that we could manage easily with the items we took with us and those available locally in Pefkos. Of course, all babies have their own individual needs. What works for one baby won't necessarily be right for another. And the availability of items at other times and in different parts of the Greek Islands may vary.

These are just our experiences from our family holiday in 2010 where we managed to buy the baby food and milk formula on our vacation to a Greek Island.

Pregnancy Pounds - How To Lose 10-20 Pounds After Pregnancy

Here's how to lose those 10-20 leftover pregnancy pounds that refuse to go away after you've given birth.

First, I must say that this isn't some quick fix. At this point, you don't want a quick fix weight loss since your body is in a delicate position. So I'm going to give you a short list of things you can do to safely lose weight in a healthy manner.

1. Eat baby food

Yep, you heard right. It's not just for your baby. This is a cheap, high quality, small-portioned snack that's ideal for new mothers. I like the banana puree myself. If you could just replace snacks with a small jar of baby food... this small step will have a big impact on your weight loss. By itself it's not much, but when added to other small steps, it works awesome.

2. Take fish oil pills

Not only are the healthy omega 3 fats in this good for your baby's brain development if you're breast feeding, they're also good for weight loss... for you. Since our modern diets are almost devoid of these omega 3 fats, bringing these up to par goes a long way towards creating a balance between omega 3, omega 6, and omega 9 fats in your body.

This balance is ideal for weight loss. Depending on the quality of the pill, you'll probably want to take between 6-10 grams of fish oil pills each day for a weight loss effect.

3. Eat 3-4 scrambled eggs and 1/2 can of black beans every morning

This is big because it sets up the rest of your day. If you start off right (with a high protein, high fiber meal), it'll be easier for you to breeze through the day without your body trying to play calorie catch-up using convenient high calorie foods and snacks that are bad for you.

A lot of your bad eating habits can be directly traced to either skipping breakfast or eating a bad breakfast. Make this 1 change and your body will reward you almost immediately with weight loss.

That's how you can lose 10-20 pounds of that leftover pregnancy weight without suffering or feeling like you're being punished for trying to lose weight. Nothing is unhealthy about it, so give it a 1 week test-drive and prove it to yourself.

If you're sick and tired of getting the same old boring and tired weight loss advice on how to lose 10-20 pounds... you know, like "Eat more fruits and vegetables, drink 8 glasses of water, exercise more, and blah blah blah"... then you found the right person. I'll make weight loss easy and enjoyable for you... AND NOT BORING!

Listen, I understand you want to lose the weight you gained during pregnancy without changing much in your diet or exercise plans... I get it. I have this completely covered. Description
Level 1 Slow Flow wide neck BornFree Nipple is recommended for babies 0-3 months. Nipples are made of silicone. Dishwasher safe (top rack).

- I bought these bottles 2 years ago when I was pregnant with my daughter and loved them. I had none of the other issues that other reviewers had such as collapsed nipples or the nipples wearing (my DD started teething at 4 mos so it wasn't a biting issue, nor did they wear from washing too frequently since we only had 6-8 bottles). The valve system worked great and I would recommend this bottle system to anyone. The only drawback I have found and the reason I am only giving 4 stars instead of 5 is that there are a LOT of parts to wash with having to take the valves apart, etc. Other than that I loved them and will use them for my hubby to feed our new baby when I am not home.

Starting Baby on Rice Cereal

There seems to be a lot of debate about the best time to start solids foods. Older schools of thought start giving there babies rice cereal mixed in bottles of formula or breast milk as early as 4 weeks old, while newer schools of thought believe that babies should start solids by 4 months of age.

If babies are introduced to solid foods earlier than 4 months old, not only will the baby's digestive system may not be able to handle it, but there is also a danger of an allergy and even obesity as the child gets older. It is safe to introduce rice cereal at 4 months old. Your baby should be eating more solids by the time he or she is 6 months old because breast milk or formula is inadequate for their needs.

Baby's First Serving of Rice Cereal

1. Your baby's first serving of rice cereal will probably only be about 1 tablespoon at first. Remember that eating food from a spoon is a new experience for your baby.

2. Make the cereal according to the packaged directions for 1 tablespoon of cereal. The consistency should be like yogurt and maybe a little thinner for some babies.

3. Offer more rice cereal each day until your baby is used to eating it from a spoon. Increase the cereal gradually over a few days to two tablespoons.

4. Once your baby has mastered eating from the spoon and is doing well, introduce other cereals such as oatmeal or barley, but be sure to introduce one at a time, waiting at least 4 days before introducing a new one. Studies have shown that babies need to try a new food up to 10 times before they learn to like it.

5. Once your baby has mastered cereals, then you can introduce fruit and vegetable purees! The fun has just begun.

You can mix cereal with breast milk, formula, or water. Breast milk or formula are adds a nutritional boost to the meal and is highly recommended.

An important note: Rice cereal mixed with breast milk turns "soupy" after standing for a while because the enzymes in the breast milk break down the cereal. It's still safe to use.

Lose Baby Fat - How to Exercise and Lose Those Post Pregnancy Pounds

Trying to lose baby fat with exercise does not have to a slow and arduous challenge. In fact, if you follow some general guidelines for effective fat loss training, those extra baby fat pounds can come off rather quickly and easily!

In this article we are going to take a look at some general guidelines to follow for safe and effective baby fat loss training.

Remember to keep your safety as your number one priority. If you have had a cesarian section, it is recommended that you avoid heavy exercise for at least three months.

Here are some of the key points that you should follow:

1. Understand the difference between weight loss and fat loss.

A lot of people nowadays follow the trend of want to lose "weight." It is important you understand that losing weight means that you are losing muscle mass, water weight, and maybe a little bit of fat. The problem is, water weight comes back on very quickly and gaining muscle mass takes time. You can lose a lot of weight quickly, but the last thing you want to do when trying to lose baby fat is to lose 20lbs in 3 weeks and them put it all back on.

You want to concentrate on losing fat while increasing muscle mass and raising your metabolism. You see, muscle is what burns body fat. If your body is primed for this to happen, your fat loss efforts will be slower but have a better chance of being permanent.

So when trying to lose baby fat, it is important that you concentrate on losing fat and not losing weight.

2. Don't go on an extreme diet.

When someone really wants to lose baby fat, it can be tempting to try and go on an extreme diet. Going on a diet where you are only eating a small amount of calories per day can result in "weight loss" like we talked about before. If your body is used to taking in a lot of calories and then you start to create a super caloric deficit, your metabolism will slow down and you will be more susceptible to put the weight back on quickly.

3. Go find a personal trainer who specializes in this area. It is a great idea for you to find a local personal trainer who is an expert in dealing with people who want to lose baby fat. Remember, your safety should be your number one priority. Having someone guide you through the process step by step is a great idea.

Remember to stay enthusiastic, keep learning, and be persistent. You can succeed!

- I don't simply want to repeat what other reviewers have said, but I wanted to improve this cup's rating because I think it's just that good.

I have no idea how you could end up with mildew in this cup, even if you use it daily. Yes, you must disassemble the cup to clean it. It's not that difficult to take apart and put back together, you just have to pay attention to what you are doing and get everything snapped together correctly. Leave the parts to dry overnight on a towel and you will be good to go the next day. It hasn't been that long since I was doing the same thing with bottles, breast pump stuff, nipples etc. etc. so it's really not that inconvinient to have one thing to clean. I have had no leaking problems when I have gotten it together correctly, but I have never put it in the dishwasher - between the super hot water and the detergent, I can see how parts might get warped.

I will be buying more.

Weight Loss After Baby - How to Get Rid of Your Cesarean Belly

Weight loss after a baby takes time, but it is not impossible. Be patient. It can take up to 6 months after pregnancy for your body to return to normal. So, even if you are not breast-feeding, don't be in too much of a hurry to cut calories. Concentrate on eating healthy foods and including physical activity in your daily routine.

Most women lose more than 10 pounds (4.5 kilograms) during childbirth, including the weight of the baby, placenta and amniotic fluid. During the first week after delivery, you'll lose additional weight as you shed retained fluids. But the fat stored during pregnancy won't disappear on its own.

1. Eat healthy Food

After pregnancy, proper nutrition is still important - especially if you're breast-feeding. Making wise choices can promote healthy weight loss after baby.

Focus on fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Foods high in fiber - such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains - provide you with many important nutrients while helping you feel full longer. Other nutrient-rich choices include low-fat dairy products, such as skim milk, yogurt and low-fat cheeses. Skinless poultry, most fish, beans, and lean cuts of beef and pork are good sources of protein, as well as zinc, iron and B vitamins.

2. Physical activity

Exercising too soon and too vigorously after giving birth can be damaging to health. Especially after Cesarean section ask your doctor first. Generally it is recommended to start 8 weeks after birth.

Exercising does not necessarily mean going to the gym for hours on end. Especially as a new mom, you won't have as much time to exercise as you once did, but you can get a great work out by simply go for a nice long walk with your new baby, or by running up and down the stairs a few times.

I know how you feel - tired, frustrated, stress. Physical activity will help you not only to get in shape after pregnancy but believe me, you will feel better, relaxed and fit. The most important is to find motivation, good reason and do not looking for excuses.

It is important to choose exercises that you enjoy and that you can incorporate into your everyday life.

Baby Whisperer Book - What Does EASY Mean?

The Baby Whisperer book series by Tracy Hogg helps parents achieve a nice balance for their young children, to help them thrive and lead a very happy infancy. There are many different baby books on the shelves today, but finding one that works for you is the challenge.

When my first son was around three months old, I found the Baby Whisperer book at my local public library. I had read a few other baby books already, but none matched me and my baby. It took me less than two days to read the entire book and I absorbed every word of it.

Tracy Hogg seemed to know my son. She knew what I need to do to help him. I used what she calls "EASY".

Simply put

E - Eat
A - Activity
S - Sleep
Y - You

Y is actually "time for You". This simple little acronym does a great job of explaining the natural rhythm an infant seems to follow. What this also does is help your infant learn to fall asleep on their own without having to use a bottle or breast to fall asleep. Although feeding to sleep may not cause any type of sleep issue in the early weeks, it can be an issue that can take a while to remedy.

Obviously the Eat part of the diddy is easy to figure out. As soon as your child wakes from their nap or in the morning after night sleep, you feed them. Activity truly depends on the age of the child. If the baby is only a week old, chances that the Activity portion would only include a diaper change and then they likely need to get back to another nap. Sleep time will range depending on the age of the baby.

Typically, babies start off at a three hour EASY or less when using the Baby Whisperer method. After a few months they typically graduate to about a four hour EASY. The nap length for EASY is "typically" around one and a half to two hours in length.

The beauty of using the EASY Baby Whisperer method is that is a flexible routine that you can tailor for any child. Both of my children thrived using the routine and learned to self soothe themselves to sleep without crying. (Tracy does not advocate letting your children cry).

The Baby Whisperer book provides a wonderful step by step formula that teaches parents how to read their babies cues and help them find a comfortable routine that suits them with letting them cry.

Jodie Seymour is the mother of two and the owner of Baby Whisperer Info where she shares her knowledge about the Baby Whisperer method and provides a list of places to purchase the Baby Whisperer book at a low cost.

Natural Teething Remedies Are Better For Babies Than Chemical Teething Medications

When baby is around six months old, the milk teeth will start to emerge through the gums. This is clearly a painful episode and causes much discomfort. Though there are many gels and medications now available, the best way to treat this is with natural teething remedies.

An early sign that baby is teething is starting to chew on their toys, fingers, or pretty much any object they can get hold of and put in the mouths. As such, it is good to give them something healthy to chew on.

Pieces of raw fruit and vegetable are excellent here, whilst it also works to familiarize them with these excellent foodstuffs. Bread or bread sticks are also good, but many prefer apple, pear, carrot and cucumber.

If this is your chosen route, it is important to steer clear of sugary foods. Even at this early stage, baby can suffer with tooth decay, which should be avoided at all costs. Whenever baby is eating or chewing on anything, it is essential that somebody supervises them at all times to ensure they do not get into any trouble and begin to choke.

Although foods are effective natural teething remedies, so too are drinks. Cool drinks will help soothe baby's gums, and can be particularly useful if they are dribbling excessively. Simply using cool water is often the best way forward here, but anything sugar free can be considered.

It is important to understand that it should be cool liquid, not cold straight from the refrigerator. This will be too shocking for baby at this stage. It is also important not to use sugar laden drinks, again for the risk of causing tooth decay at such an early age.

Often, the best of all natural teething remedies do not involve baby's mouth at all. Surprised? It's actually quite true. Often all baby needs is a little comforting, a hug, and someone just being there for him or her.

Playing with your baby is also an excellent distraction. As when we take our mind off of something troubling us, so too this works with teething. Introducing something for them to do, with games and shiny or colorful things is really effective. Sometimes, if baby is irritable or tired this may not work however.

The symptoms of teething can be alleviated through cleaning too. This will have a soothing effect as baby's gums will be massaged of course, but is also important to ward off tooth decay. At first, using a piece of gauze will be enough, but as more teeth appear, a specially designed toothbrush should be used.

Babies can become very cranky when they are cutting their first teeth and it is tempting to use commercial teething medications to soothe them. However these can contain several powerful chemicals which baby is better off without. Visit me at natural teething remedies to discover better options to help baby through this difficult time. Wendy Owen(HH Dip)is a holistic health therapist.

- I bought this for my baby when he was 6 months old. He didn't really show interest other than chewing on them until 11 months. He now tries to put the tops on and off himself. He can't twist the tops on or squirt them yet he is really developing some great fine motor skills practicing putting them together and taking them apart. He laughs the whole time and thinks he's super cool when he gets one together! They are by far the favorite toy in the bathtub. I have a 4 year old son who loves these also. I do agree that they don't squirt vigorously as one other review said but you get a good 4 squirts before you have to refill and it's still great fun. We love this product.

Early Child Development

During the first year of early child development your baby develops at an incredible rate, not just physically, but intellectually, emotionally, even socially. Your baby was born with a certain amount of reflexes, like sucking, grasping and crying. But within a few weeks of your infant's development she will become more and more efficient at these actions and gradually those reflex behaviors will be replaced by deliberate actions of sucking, grasping and crying. Your baby is learning that if she sucks, she will eat. If she cries someone will comfort her.

It's interesting to note that at 4 months of age, your baby has yet to reach the stage of early child development known as 'object permanence'; so when an object is out of his sight he has forgotten about it (literally out of sight, out of mind). If a toy is moved from his sight he won't look for it, because he has forgotten about it.

But as your baby matures in his early stages of child development he develops object permanence. By around 8 months a baby will look for a toy he was playing with if it is taken out of his vision. This is why babies at this age love dropping toys and watching you pick them up! They have figured out that the toy has not disappeared when they drop it, and are thrilled to see it reappear! Parents who go along with the game of bending over and picking up the rattle over and over again while their child gleefully tosses it back to the floor are strengthening their little scientists' theory of object permanence.

It is also at this stage of your baby's early stages of child development that she loves to play peek-a-boo. She knows you are still there, even though you have hidden your face, and she is delighted when you reappear.

Parent's can test their baby's object permanence by sitting them in a high chair with a toy. If you drop the toy on the ground and she looks down for it, then she has grasped the concept of object permanence. If she doesn't look for it, then she is not quite at that stage of child development at the earliest stages yet.

There are lots of fun games to play with babies who are at this stage of child development. Let your 10 month old baby see you 'hide' her toy under a blanket. She will be delighted to pull the blanket away to find her toy (and can play this game over and over again!)

Babies at this stage also love to imitate the changes in your face. Stick your tongue out, and watch her imitate the action. Playing games like this with your baby is an excellent way to spend quality time as well as a way to help develop her grasp of object permanence.

Instant Colic Baby Relief

Are you desperate to stop your baby from crying? Does is break your heart to see your baby in such distress and obvious discomfort? You are not alone. Statistics show that 6 out of 10 babies born suffer from some form of colic in their first few months. The situation may seem dire, but help is at hand. In this article you will be introduced to a method of fast and highly effective natural colic baby relief that is simple, safe and gentle.

I am sure you must have tried the common methods of soothing babies such as using noise distraction, swaddling and different carrying position. These methods are commonly recommended to soothe babies suffering from colic. But this is really all it does. It simply soothes your baby and distracts them from their discomfort.

Then there are the other methods of natural medication such as gripe water colic calming. These fluids have certain properties that claim to reduce discomfort in the babies abdomen. There is no proof that these techniques work and in some cases there may even be a negative reaction. For example, a colicky baby suffering from reflux will not take well to fluids containing peppermint or ginger as this may aggravate their pain.

To truly treat colic, we need to identify the cause. Indigestion, wind, gas, constipation and reflux are all symptoms of an imbalance in the nervous system of our baby. You can see why there are no medications that actually work for colic relief. There are no medicines that can re balance the nervous system of your baby. How does the nervous system go out of balance? A stressful experience such as birth has shown to cause a shift in the nervous system and your baby quickly becomes stressed and anxious.

The most effective method of colic baby relief is to re balance the nervous system. This is done using Baby Bowen. Baby Bowen is safe, simple and extremely gentle. The best bit is that Baby Bowen only consists of 5 gentle moves that can be learned so easily and you can treat your baby by yourself!

Night Feedings by Age and When to Night Wean a Baby

Many parents wonder at what age their baby can go all night without a feeding and sleep through the night. This article will outline general guidelines about how many night feedings your baby might need at each age and when to consider night weaning your baby or toddler.

Pediatricians all seem to disagree to the answer to the question when a baby can go all night without a feeding. There are some doctors who claim babies do not need to eat at night after 3 months old and then there are others, who believe that babies need 1-2 night feedings up through 9 months old. If you talk to your pediatrician, the answer will likely be even something different.

It does seem a bit extreme to consider night weaning an infant as young as 3 months old and not likely that all babies, particularly breastfed babies, can go all night at the age with a night feeding. Some babies will do this on their own at that age or younger, but it is not uncommon for a baby to wake at night and need a feeding to get them through until morning.

In general, when it comes to hunger at night, it would be best to err on the side of caution. It would be much easier to not feed your baby at night, but consider there are adults who cannot go 12 hours without eating; therefore it may be unreasonable to expect a growing baby to go 10-12 hours at night without a feeding. Parents will want to make sure they are feeding baby during sleep when they are truly hungry and not creating a sleep association where baby is conditioned to think he has to have a night feeding to get back to sleep. Generally, it is a good idea to consider a night weaning schedule when your baby is showing signs she is ready and that age can vary by child.

Below are the number of feedings at night, at various ages, that are within "normal" range and do not throw up a red flag that there is more going on than just a feeding:

• Newborns to 3 months old: Feedings every 2-3 hours, on demand
• 3-4 Months: 2-3 feedings per night or every 3-6 hours, on demand
• 5-6 Months: 1-2 feedings
• 7-9 Months: 1, maybe 2, feedings
10-12 Months: Sometimes 1 feeding
• 12+ Months: Generally no feedings

Obviously, growth spurts are an exception and you should feed as needed during those. Growth spurts are generally over within a week.

You can consider at least an attempt at night-weaning by 8-9 months old, because at some point, sometimes it is a chicken and egg problem. A baby needs a certain amount of sustenance during the day and if he gets some at night, he will not eat more during the day and if he does not eat more during the day, he needs it at night. So, sometimes, a baby really does feel hungry at night, but it does not mean he can't go all night without a feeding, it simply means he needs to adjust how much he is eating during the day. The idea is to gently help him do this. Often, parents can see an improvement in baby's sleep when their baby or toddler has been weaned from night feedings at the right age.

Newborn Baby Checklist - A Complete List of Newborn Needs For the New Mom

The long awaited day is almost here! Soon you will hold a precious baby in your arms, and you want everything to be perfect!

Bringing home a newborn baby, especially when it is your first, can be daunting. Such big changes and unknowns can cause a new mom stress. "De-stressify" your preparation with this newborn baby checklist. It will help give you the confidence to know you are prepared!

The following newborn baby checklist can be used as a guideline in the quest to be prepared for your new arrival. While no checklist will have you prepared for EVERYTHING (like finding out your mother-in-law will be coming to "help" for a few weeks), this one ought to come close!

Clothing - Newborn babies grow into the next size very quickly! Don't go crazy purchasing the tiny newborn clothing items, or you may find that your baby has outgrown them before he/she has even had a chance to try them on! By the time your baby is about 8-9 pounds, you will need the 3 month old clothing (these will last until your baby is about 12 pounds). Some larger babies even skip the newborn size altogether!

The quantities listed here are based on the assumption that you will be washing your laundry at least 2 times per week.

  • 5-10 newborn sized outfits

  • 2 sweaters

  • 5-7 sleepwear

  • 2-4 wearable blankets or sleep sacks

  • 4-6 onsies

  • dress clothes

  • 2 pairs of mittens (for preventing scratches)

  • hats - one for warmth and one for shade

  • snowsuit - do NOT use when your baby is in his/her car seat

  • 6-10 pairs of socks (more is better because they are so little that they get lost or "eaten" by the washing machine)

  • accessories - such as shoes, hair decor, jewelry

  • mild laundry detergent

Bathing and Grooming - When my first baby was born, we had very little in the way of baby supplies - and nothing for bathing. Do you know what we discovered? We didn't really need much. He got perfectly clean when I bathed him in the bathroom sink and washed his hair with the kitchen sink hose.

So why did I include most of the following items in this newborn baby checklist? Convenience. There is a LOT to be said for convenience when you have a newborn baby in the house!

  • baby tub or baby bathing sponge

  • 4 baby washcloths

  • 2 hooded towels

  • baby lotion

  • baby brush

  • infant nail clippers

  • baby shampoo/body wash

  • bath thermometer

Nursery Items - A beautifully decked-out nursery is a fun way to prepare for your new baby. Giving the baby's room personality and then putting away the items he/she will be using makes it start feeling like he will REALLY be arriving soon! Consider:

  • dresser

  • baby size hangers

  • rocking chair

  • cd player with soothing cds

  • night light

  • nursery decor - wall hangings, window coverings, bed skirt

Diapering - "Changing a diaper is a lot like getting a present from your grandmother - you're not sure what you've got but you're pretty sure you're not going to like it." (Foxworthy) No baby checklist would be complete without "covering" this.

  • wet wipes - either commercial or home-made

  • changing table with a water-proof pad

  • 3 washable changing pad covers

  • hand sanitizer

  • diaper rash remedy

  • wipe warmer

  • diaper disposal or diaper pail with liners

  • basket or diaper holder for keeping diapers orderly

    If using disposable diapers:

  • 10-12 disposable diapers per day

    OR

    If using cloth diapers:

  • 24-36 cloth diapers

  • 8-10 diaper covers

  • inserts and liners

  • diaper pins if the chosen system calls for them

  • diaper sprayer

Feeding - After you have decided whether you will be breastfeeding or bottle feeding, you will want to consider which items you will need to assist you in growing a healthy baby.

    Breastfeeding Needs:

  • 3-5 nursing bras

  • nursing pads - washable or disposable

  • breast pump

  • nipple cream

  • breast milk storage containers

  • breast feeing pillow

  • nursing cover

  • 10 burp rags

    Bottle Feeding Needs:
  • bottles (BPA free) - start with just a few until you know what your baby will prefer

  • nipples (clear silicone)

  • formula - don't stock up until you know it will "agree" with your baby

  • 10 burp rags

  • bottle brush

  • bottle warmer

  • drying rack

  • sterilization bags

Sleeping - Newborn babies spend about 18 out of every 24 hours sleeping. At least some of that time you will want to put him/her down to tend to your own needs. Your baby's safety during that time is paramount. Providing a safe, comfortable, familiar place to sleep will help your baby establish good sleeping habits which will in turn facilitate YOUR sleep. You will need:

  • sleeping place - crib with mattress, portable crib, bassinet, Moses basket, or co-sleeper

  • 2 mattress pads

  • 3 fitted sheets

  • 6-8 receiving blankets

  • baby monitor

  • a small fan for air circulation and white noise

Traveling - Whether it is across town or across the country - you will want to show off your baby (or at least re-stock on diapers). Traveling with a newborn is more complicated than grabbing your keys and walking out the door, but you will be prepared for any trip if you have:

  • car seat

  • diaper bag

  • replacement car seat cover

  • stroller

  • baby sling or carrier

  • blankets of varying thicknesses

  • car seat travel bag for air travel

  • portable crib

Health - No one likes to think about their baby becoming ill, but sooner or later it is bound to happen. Be prepared by having the following items on hand:

  • nasal aspirator/bulb syringe

  • petroleum jelly

  • digital thermometer

  • rubbing alcohol & q-tips (for umbilical cord care)

  • infant acetaminophen - use with newborns only under advisement of your pediatrician

  • saline nasal spray

  • a great pediatrician

  • Don't forget to add your baby to your health insurance policy!

Safety - Your newborn won't be mobile for a few months, but you will want to have safety items in place well before that occurs.

  • safety gates

  • corner/edge bumpers

  • safety locks

  • outlet covers

Development and Entertainment - Most of your newborn baby's early development will come from the cuddling, singing, talking, and interaction provided by the ones who love him/her the most. A few items that will stimulate and entertain him/her while you are occupied will be beneficial to you both.

  • baby mobile or a plastic mirror for the crib

  • a few toys of differing textures

  • baby swing and/or baby bouncer

  • baby book for recording all of the milestones

A common "rookie mom" mistake is caring for her baby to the exclusion of caring for herself. Don't forget to make "mommy care" a priority, too. Add your favorite bubble bath to your newborn baby checklist - and then use it!
