Designer Baby Clothes

The kind of clothes a baby wears largely depends upon affordability and the personality of the parents. While all parents like their babies to be smartly -dressed, there are those who want to go the extra mile.

Indulging babies in designer outfits is fairly common among celebrity parents and those who can afford it. The designer baby clothing industry is well-established, with top designers churning out lots of fabulous designer outfits for infants and toddlers. And, even though children outgrow clothing quickly, designer baby clothes grow more popular as each year passes. Parents go crazy buying designer body suits, bibs, booties and bonnets and pay ten times more than they would if they went to a regular baby or department clothing store.

Some of the best-known baby designers include Baby Dior, Baby Phat and Anne Geddes. Baby Dior offers cotton body suits complete with its signature teddy bear logo. The Dior collection can be found online at e-LUXURY.com. The Baby Phat line is a creation of rapper Russell Simmons. Baby Phat has styles specifically for teenage girls down to infancy. Their most popular line is the Baby Phat tee shirt that sells for approximately $15.

Although Anne Geddes is most noted for her famous photographs to match her ladybug babies. Her line offers all kinds of cute outfits including a ladybug jacket, a bunny suit and a rosebud quilt.

The next time you're invited to a baby shower or a child's birthday party, buy a designer gift for the little one. You'll be the hit of the party for sure!

Mentally And Emotionally Prepare For Your New Baby

New Mother's-To-Be worry about all the wrongs things. They worry about getting fat, they worry about how they will raise their baby, they worry about their baby's being ugly, they worry about which diapers are best, and they worry about finding the right toys and clothes for the baby. Their thoughts are self-centered.

More than anything else, prepare yourself mentally and emotionally. This new life will place demands on you like you've never experienced before. Your thought pattern will instantly change from self to baby exclusively.

You are going to experience pain, frustration, loneliness, anger, and a myriad of unpleasant feelings. Some feelings will be hormonally base, and others situationally valid.

A new baby gives absolutely nothing back for all the care and work you put forth. The baby only takes. That's their job. This will continue for at least 4 to 6 full months. Will you have the fortitude, perseverance, and patience this requires? My aunt bluntly told me when I was pregnant with my first child that if you give the baby all you can when it's small, you'll save yourself heartache when it's older because sooner or later he or she will demand all you attention. Buckle down and get it done early.

A baby has built-in radar. If you're upset, the baby is upset. Even if you talk gently and quietly to the baby, but inside you're upset...trust me, the baby will know. Will you be able to remain calm and loving inside when nothing but chaos surrounds you? Read everything you can that teaches you calming mental and physical techniques.

Your sense of who you are packs its bags and leaves for a very long time. Can your self-esteem handle this? Establish during your pregnancy who you are. Write down all that defines you. Place emphasis on the positive points. List your interests, accomplishments, and talents. You will be doing yourself a favor if you refer back to these lists when the new baby arrives, and you're feeling your identity slipping away. Keep a few items from your list active during the first few months with baby. If that means reaching out to others to simply lend a kind ear....Do it.

Religiously find a few minutes every day to focus on the positives that have occurred. Write them down. Set your goal for 5 per day. Make this a daily habit. It's your choice to either view this experience as a negative or positive.

You've heard this before; but, adequate sleep is everything. The old adage, "Ain't Nobody Happy When Momma Ain't Happy," is as true today as it has been since the beginning of time. I don't care what you have to do in order to find that extra hour or two...find it. Ask or demand, if necessary, your husband take over. He can do this. You honestly are not the only one capable of caring for baby. If possible, hire a sitter or ask a family member or friend for two hours whenever possible. Put the guilt away and care for yourself. A Super Mom is not a good mom. A Super Mom is an exhausted mom. Good moms are happy moms. Find that extra time for yourself.

If you find yourself avoiding your baby, thinking hurtful thoughts toward the baby or yourself, crying hours on end, or feeling seriously depressed, this is not normal. You may be suffering postpartum depression. Immediately seek professional help. You'll find you aren't alone, and there is excellent help available.

You've been told that with a new baby your life will never be the same. This is true; however, it's also true that no new day is identical to yesterday. Resist falling into the juvenile thought pattern of, "It's always going to be like this." Life constantly changes. Stay off the pity pot and move forward.

You will find that your husband will continue to expect your undivided attention. He simply doesn't get it. Accept this. It's normal and your best way to handle this is to give him attention in ways he doesn't expect. Have him sit alone with you on the sofa (even if it's for 5 minutes and snuggle all the while telling him he's the best thing that ever happened to you and how much you appreciate him; hug him unexpectedly; or, simply take ten quiet minutes and listen (with honest interest) to what's on his mind. He needs to feel acknowledged and validated. I'm not saying you will enjoy this, but he will feel less neglected and repay you with the extra hand you need. Dads are not moms and never will be. Their role with the new baby is quite different than yours. It never has been and never will be a 50/50 proposition.

Prepare yourself well if you're planning on returning to work after the baby is born. Make advance plans for baby's care. Know that leaving your baby in the care of someone else is going to hurt. Your baby is your heart with little arms and legs running out into this big old world. You can lessen the hurt by finding care for the baby with someone you trust and know is gentle and kind in spirit. Take ample time in finding the best place possible for baby so that you can do your job and not spend the entire day worrying.

Forget the extra pounds, the toys, the diapers, and the cute little clothes. You have a big job ahead and preparing well mentally and emotionally will go a long way toward making this new and exciting chapter of your life joyful and fulfilling.

Raising Triplets

Multiple births seem to be more common than ever. With the use of fertilization drugs twins, triplets, and more are common place. Spontaneous or natural triplets are far more rare. Depending on what statistics you chose to believe, the chances of having spontaneous triplets are about 1 in a million.

When a couple finds out that they are having triplets, it is usually a real shock. There is definitely a period of adjustment. Instead of thinking about just one baby, everything comes in threes. Three cribs, three car seats, three times the diapers, and the list goes on and on. This can lead to anxiety and a feeling of being completely overwhelmed.
In the case of car seats, be aware that many states require your car seats to pass a test before the baby is allowed to leave the hospital. Make sure that you understand the laws of your particular state before you purchase expensive car seats that you may not be able to use.

What are the things you can do when you find out you are having triplets? Well, the first thing you can do is make sure that you are eating properly for four. This is not an easy task. Although opinions vary, many doctors say that you will need around 200 grams of protein per day and up to 4000 calories. There are many books and on-line resources to look at to find a nutrition path that works for you.

Another great source of information are multiples groups. If you live in a metropolitan area, chances are there is a group like this close to you. These groups are great for learning about what to expect when you are expecting multiples. They also have access to baby clothes, furniture, and toys. Usually these items are very cheap and can help when you have to tighten that budget when your threesome is on the way. These groups can also offer Mom a great way to get out of the house and interact with women who are in the exact same situation that they find themselves in.

Many companies offer great discounts for families with multiples. Be sure to check every time you make a purchase to find out if the store or company offers a discount. Since you will be buying three of a lot of things, it never hurts to ask. Plenty of companies offer coupons and free product to families with multiples.

Meet with other parents with multiples. They will be happy to tell you about their experiences. You can learn from what they did and formulate your own plan. People with experience raising triplets always preach the importance of having and maintaining a schedule. Getting your three babies doing things at the same time is important. This will make things easier on the entire family.

Multiples are a blessing. There are lots of resources out there to help you in raising your triplets. Do not be afraid to ask questions and ask for help.

Feeding Your Baby The First Year

Of all the things parents worry about, nutrition is perhaps one of the biggest. Proper nutrition and feeding of your baby is one of the very most important things to consider when thinking about her well being. Physical and intellectual growth is dependent on the right vitamins and nutrients.

Having stressed the importance of proper nutrition...you can relax a little. Feeding your baby really isn't difficult if you have the basics down.

Breast Milk or Formula?

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recommends breast feeding as the healthiest food for babies. Studies have shown that babies who breastfeed are admitted to the hospital less, suffer fewer ear infections and cases of diarrhea and rashes, and have fewer allergies than infants who drink formula. Pediatricians recommend breastfeeding for the first year.

Not every mother is able to breastfeed, however. Women with HIV should not breastfeed, as the disease can be transmitted through the milk. Other women suffer from mastitis (infection of the breast) or soreness, and find it too uncomfortable to nurse. Returning to work can be difficult and mothers may need to use a breast pump during the day while they're away from their baby. Sometimes baby formula is necessary.

Baby formula has all the essential nutrients and vitamins needed to promote healthy growth and the American Academy of Family Physicians assures mothers that there's no need to worry when feeding their babies infant formula, or supplementing breast milk with formula. Make sure to follow the mixing directions carefully, and choose a high-quality formula. If your baby seems to be spitting up excessively, you may want to change brands. Work closely with your pediatrician to find the right formula for your infant.

Introducing Solid Food

It's very important not to introduce solid food before your baby is ready. Solid foods can wreak havoc on an immature digestive system and both of you could be in for a long night of constipation or tummy trouble if you are too eager. There has also been some research that suggests that babies who are introduced to solid food too early can develop food allergies.

The American Academy of Pediatrics suggests that babies be introduced to solid foods at six months, though some pediatricians recommend rice or oatmeal cereal as young as four months.

Start slowly, with only a tablespoon or so of the new food you are introducing. Introduce one food at a time so that if your baby does have an allergy, you'll be able to identify which food is the cause. It's best to wait four days between each new food.

If your baby pushes the food right back out of his mouth, he's probably not ready for solids yet. Give him a week or so, then try again.

Start with bland, easy-to-digest foods first, moving on to other foods slowly and only as your baby is ready. Here's a general guide:

Six months:

Rice or Oatmeal cereal (these are the most easily digested grains). They should be mixed with breast milk or infant formula.

  1. Pureed:

  2. Apples

  3. Bananas

  4. Pears

  5. Avocado

  6. Sweet Potatoes

  7. Squash

  8. Green Beans

8 - 10 months

Depending on your baby's co-ordination, you'll want to introduce finger foods. In addition to the breast milk or infant formula, you can also introduce the following:

  1. Soft breads and muffins

  2. Pasta

  3. Cheese

  4. Yogurt

  5. Raw, ripe fruit

  6. Soft, cooked veggies

  7. Eggs

  8. Beans

  9. Crackers

  10. Melon

  11. Cottage cheese

  12. Lean beef, pork or chicken

Make sure to avoid foods that pose choking hazards such as popcorn, nuts and firm non-ripe fruits. Always supervise your baby while she's eating. And never give raw honey to a child under one year old.

Work closely with your doctor

It's important to work as a team with your baby's pediatrician when choosing what she should eat and when. Don't ever hesitate to ask for advice, and follow recommendations.

Baby Shower Songs - Great Background to Open Newborn Baby Gifts

Everyone loves a good pop song to groove to, so why not choose a couple of those great hits to play in your baby shower while mom is opening all the amazing newborn baby gifts. Two great songs that were hits a few years ago were Mariah Careys "Always Be My Baby" and Britney Spears "Baby One More Time." These songs will make all your guests stand on their feet and dance around!

"Always Be My Baby" has a great beat and amazing lyrics. The words can easily be interpreted from a mother to her precious baby. Mothers say that no matter how much their kid grows up, they will always be their baby. This amazing hit begins saying, "We were as one for a moment in time and it seemed everlasting, that you would always be mine; now you want to be here so I'll let you fly 'cause I know in my heart our love will never die; you'll always be a part of me; I'm part of you indefinitely."

A mother experiences nine months of carrying her child before she gives birth. This is one of the best times in her life where she feels like she is one with her baby. This song can be interpreted as expressing the feeling of being one with your baby and then watching him or her grow up and make their own life. One of my favorite parts is when the Mariah Carey sings, "Don't you know you can't escape me, oh darling cause you'll always be my baby." Every mother feels like this; no matter how old her baby gets, she knows that they will always be her baby.

Britney Spear's unforgettable hit of the late 90's, "Baby One More Time" is a song that all of your guests will know and sing along to. Regardless of age, most people have heard the famous song numerous times. This one is great for singing along and dancing. The number one pop hit begins with a repetitive "Oh baby, baby." When you play this song, your guests will go wild, especially if mom is in the process of opening the baby shower gifts. There is actually a part of the song that describes a feeling that can be applied to mothers.

We all know moms can be overprotective at times and can almost lose their minds when their children are not under their supervision. I absolutely love the part of the song when the pop princess sings, "Show me, how you want it to be, tell me baby 'cause I need to know now what we've got; My loneliness is killing me; I must confess, I still believe; When I'm not with you I lose my mind."

However, my favorite part of the whole song, which I think definitely resembles a mother's words toward her baby is when Britney sings, "The reason I breathe is you." There is a popular belief that says that when a person has a baby, they stop living for themselves and start living for their child. "Baby, One More Time" is probably one of the best pop songs for a shower that all your guests will enjoy.

Pop songs are known for their cool beats, catchy lyrics, and ability to make people get up and dance. Use a couple of them that relate to or mention the word "baby" and include them as part of your music for the baby shower. They will definitely stir up fun and laughter for opening the newborn baby gifts!

Successful Weight Loss After Pregnancy

How fast you lose weight will depend on a number of factors, including the amount of weight you gained during your pregnancy.

Most women will lose anywhere from 10-14 pounds within the first 2 weeks of delivery. This weight may be attributed primarily to the loss of excess fluid in the body, the baby's weight, the placenta and amniotic fluid. Some women might lose a little bit less, and others might lose a little bit more.

As the uterus shrinks back down to its normal size and your hormone levels continue to fall, you will lose weight. Most women gain at least 7 pounds of fat during pregnancy. This fat is meant to help women store energy while breastfeeding. How fast this weight comes off will depend on a number of factors including: genetics, your overall health, diet and exercise.

You should expect that it will take a little bit of time to lose the weight you gained during pregnancy. It did after all take you nine months to put that weight on! Many women have successfully lost weight however, in just a few short months after a delivery.

Some women will hang on to the last few pounds they have to lose until they stop breastfeeding. Your body may want to cling to a few extra pounds to ensure you have enough energy to provide adequate milk for the baby. Every woman's experience is unique with respect to this.

The good news is that with a solid nutritional program and with moderate exercise, you can expect to lose the weight you gained during pregnancy within a reasonable time frame.

Most women will be back to their pre pregnancy weight within nine months of delivering IF they follow a regular exercise program and eat healthily after delivery. That said some women will lose their pregnancy weight in as little as six to twelve weeks!

Travelling With Children

It always puzzled me how friends with children would rave about package holidays with children's entertainment laid on. This was my idea of hell, perky people in uniform drilling your kids on quad bikes and trampolines from dawn until dusk. And then my husband and I took our first non-package 'Dream Holiday', with our three month old daughter and two year old son. In Tuscany, in a stunning converted Monastry surrounded by the green and peaceful Tuscan countryside. Peaceful, that is until we arrived.

The flight over should have been enough to make us turn back. A small, active child and a cranky baby contained in an enormous queue that moved slower than paint drying. Trying to explain, when we finally found our tiny seats, why you couldn't run up and down the aisles or meet all the other passengers. The realisation on landing that I was in pain and my foot had a sinister looking blister that had not been there when we left...

Oh well, I thought, things will be fine once we get there. I'll be able to rest then. Famous last words. Here's a test, how relaxing would you find the following:

Sleeping in the same room as a two year old, who wakes ready to go at 5 am and a three month old baby who needs feeding through the night?

Coaxing a small, unwilling child to try the green pasta that the kind Italian chef has lovingly prepared for him whilst all the grown up diners watch?

Realising that the bite on your foot now has a life of it's own and that you are going to need medical attention in a rural area where you only know how to say 'hello' and 'thank you'?

Realising that there is actually nothing for the two year old to do at the gorgeous converted monastery except to go for country walks or, having exhausted both parents, to try and get the other elegant, childless couples to play with him?

Finally lying on a sun lounger by the swimming pool and almost immediately rescuing said two year old who has slipped on the shiny terracotta tiles into the deep end. A feat that causes you to leave the three month old stranded abruptly on the sun lounger and causes tears all round?

So what did I learn from that trip? Well, I now know all the possible Italian words for insect bite. I know that small children think the world is a playground and everybody is their friend. That you are unlikely to find time for romance or even a half decent conversation with your husband when there is nothing for the kids to do. That my friends were right and we have since booked holidays where we enjoy time as a family and then wave the little darlings off to their pre-scheduled activities so they can be with people like them. All's well that ends well. Although, I would still like to know what bit me and if it is still lurking at an airport ready for its next unsuspecting holiday maker...

Here are some tips for travelling with children:

Being ill abroad - It can happen. Make sure you have the correct travel insurance before travelling. Do some research on the country you are visiting to see if you need specific injections before you go. Talk to your doctor. Google 'Travel Abroad' and look for Government websites that will cover all the basics. If you do fall ill and you don't speak the language, try to find someone who can interpret for you so that both you and the Doctor can communicate more effectively.

Travelling with kids - Think about what it's going to be like for you and them before you book. Is a two week mountain trekking holiday really going to work with a 3 month old baby? Look for holidays where you can all get the kind of rest and fun that you need! Make sure that you have snacks and pocket activities for time waiting at airports or for the car.

Go with another family - Do you know a family that you could holiday with? Do you all get on? Do your kids get on? If you do, this can be a great way of keeping the kids happy and having shared child care and adult time.

How to Pay Your Babysitter

If you've never hired a babysitter before, one of the things a practical parent may worry about is payment. Fortunately, babysitters aren't too expensive. They usually range from about four to twelve dollars per hour, depending on a few factors:

Factors that Affect a Babysitter's Salary

-Their amount of previous experience. Obviously, those with more experience will ask for a higher rate.

-Any training they've had that is relevant to babysitting, such as CPR, first aid, a -babysitting workshop, or child care.

-The age of your children. Some ages require a lot of supervision, while others only require minimal supervision. Infants generally require the most supervision because they cannot be let out of sight.

-Additional tasks you assign her that are outside the usual scope of babysitting. These can be the care of pets, tutoring the child, or keeping the house tidy.

-Room and board, food, and other benefits you are offering. The more benefits you offer, the less money you can expect to her.

-The number of hours she will be babysitting. If she is staying overnight or on a holiday, it is to be expected that she will get an overnight bonus.

-The babysitter's age often matters. Most teenagers charge much less than an adult sitter.

When you are interviewing the babysitter, one of the important questions is her salary expectation. Compare your own expectations. If she has a standard rate, or if she comes from an agency, you may be expected to stand by it. You may also negotiate in most cases, if she is a freelancer. Here, you can bring up the factors that may affect payment. Agree upon how you are to pay her- whether it will be a set rate for the entire month or hourly.

When you have agreed on a certain salary, ask her if she prefers cash or credit.

Network Marketing and a Six Month Old Baby

So what does my six month old baby Olivia have to do with network marketing? It turns out that I learn a lot from my daughter Olivia when I'm spending time with her. Network marketing is a business of moving forward with no fear. No procrastination. When I play with Olivia, she reminds me daily that to be a success in network marketing, you will have to fail to succeed. New born babies have no fear. They do what ever they want and don't care about the outcome. They know what they want and go after it. Do you treat your network-marketing business this way?

MLM is a business of becoming a master student of the game. My beautiful Olivia reminds me of this all the time. How so? Well, think about it for a minute. From the time their born they have to go through a process of growing up. Just like you in your network-marketing business. They have to learn the good from the bad. What works and what doesn't. Just like you in your network marketing business. MLM success is achieved by going through a growing process and finding what works. For some people it takes a while. For others they get it quicker. Just like some babies do. In a lot of ways running a successful network-marketing business is like teaching a baby what you feel will work for them.

Another thing my daughter Olivia does is that she never quits. She will do the same thing over and over again. Network marketing is also a business of doing what works over and over again. Repetition is the mother of all learning and that's exactly what babies do to become a successful adult. If you have children then allow me to suggest, while I'm on the subject that it's critical to watch what you expose your baby or babies to in the world. People are a product of their society. Just like when you do your best to expose your network marketing downline to what you feel will be in their best interest.

In network marketing you do your best to teach and coach your downline to perform at their best. I do the same for my daughter Olivia. Network marketing also gives me and anyone who wants it the opportunity to spend that valuable time with their kids and to live life on their own terms. So go out and try new ideas in your business and never quit. You deserve healthy success.

Too Big! - Kimberly A. Madsen - Eagle Mountain Ut
This suit is beautiful but a size 8 that would normally fit my eight year old was way too big. I bought a six and we'll see how that works out. I will have to put away the size eight for later. Great suit for a great price just order a size smaller.

Teaching Your Toddler To Feed Himself

In the article on weaning your baby I suggested that from 10 months onwards, you could start offering other types of food to your baby but they must be cut up finely so that baby will not choke. By the time your baby is 1 year old he should be taking a variety of food so it would be easy to progress to eating adult food. By now he should have enough teeth to chew his food and if you have been sitting him at the dinner table during meal times he should have learnt from watching you, how to chew his food.

A few pointers to remember when feeding your toddler

o Never leave your toddler alone to feed himself. This is because most children will put all the food they see into their mouth which could cause choking or vomiting.

o Always check that your child has swallowed the food before offering the next mouthful. You can do this by asking your child to open his mouth. This applies even when he is able to feed himself.

o Finger food should be soft and easy to chew or dissolve in the mouth. Do not give big chunks or sticks of food for them to bite off until they are 2 years old. If they accidentally bite off a biggish piece it could cause choking or the food could slip into the airways and get lodged in the lungs which may require surgery to remove it. Believe me; I have seen many cases where children lose a bit of their lungs because of care takers' negligence.

o Never give infants or young children iced or refrigerated foods or liquids, because the coldness can damage the stomach and intestines, inhibiting the capacity to digest, assimilate, and eliminate. Liquids and soft cooked foods served warm or at room temperature are the most desirable and beneficial, especially when children are sick.

o Never give children cold drinks with their meals because the stomach should be warm to best digest the food and cold drinks will dampen the 'fire' needed to break down food.

o Do not give them fizzy drinks as this causes too much gas in the stomach. Did you know that you can use coke to remove stubborn stains in your toilet bowl? Imagine what it will do to your baby's stomach if you let them drink coke!

o Never feed your child in front of the television. Children eat better when they have company so let your child eat with you.

o Never make horrible faces if you do not like the food that you see. Everything should be yummy.

All children go through phases of different eating styles.

The ferocious eating phase

This is the best phase when the child just loves eating everything that he sees. He would practically wolf everything down quick as a flash.

The keep the food in the mouth phase

This is when the child takes food into his mouth and just leaves it there without chewing or swallowing it. When he is satisfied that it has been there long enough, he will then chew and swallow it. It can take up to 1 hour to finish the meal which can be taxing if you are the impatient type of person. The possible reasons could be the child is not hungry enough or he is bored with the food, had too many snacks in between meals or he is testing your ingenuity on how to get him to eat.

The choosy phase

This is when the child decides he does not want to eat certain food. It is quite normal if your child suddenly refuses to eat a certain food that he used to enjoy, so just give him alternatives. Once the child is old enough I always ask them what they want to eat especially for breakfast. The other thing that I do is play on their vanity if I think that they should eat the food offered. I always tell them what food group the food is; for example vegetables contain Vitamin C and eating this will make their skin beautiful, eating proteins will give them strong muscles (show your strong biceps), eating vitamin A will make their eyesight strong etc. If they question me on why my skin is not smooth and beautiful, I always tell them it is because I was naughty and did not eat vegetables when I was young. They always believe me and finish everything on the plate.

The 'I don't want to eat' phase

This is very common if they have just recovered from an illness and do not have any appetite. Let your child choose what he likes but make sure that the food is nutritious and not junk food. Make sure you do not have lots of junk food in the house and they will be able to make do with what you have. It could be a piece of cheese or a couple of biscuits instead of rice.

Now let us look at how to start teaching your child to feed himself.

It is best to first teach your toddler to eat using his fingers because he has been practicing putting things into his mouth since he was 2 - 3 months old. Use foods that are dry and easy to pick up, like bread and biscuits. Show your child how to pick up food using his thumb and first finger and let him practice as often as possible.

The next stage is to teach him how to use a fork. I like to start with a plastic fork as it is lighter and easier to handle. Now you can use cut up fruits and vegetables as these are easier to prod with the fork.

Once he has mastered using the fork it is time to learn how to use a spoon. It is better to start with a teaspoon which is lighter. Initially, he will not be able to balance the food on the spoon and will tip the food off the spoon but be patient. Once he has mastered the skill of feeding himself he will not want you to feed him anymore so let him be independent.

Cooking tips

o Remove your child's portion before you add salt or reduce the amount of salt for the whole family

o Do not use monosodium glutamate in the food

o Add a little extra water when cooking rice so that it is slightly softer

o Use smaller fish because it has less methyl-mercury

From bottle to cup

Regardless of what other people say, I strongly believe that children should drink water starting from infancy. In our country, children tend to lose fluids through invisible loss and the drying effects of air-conditioners. If they have a fever or they are 'heaty' they will need slightly more to keep the internal system cool. If the children start drinking water early, once they grow older, they will not have problems drinking water. In fact you cannot find sweet fizzy drinks in my house. If the weather is very hot everybody has to drink extra water. The other drink which I encourage is barley with winter melon strips instead of sugar.

All the babies below 6 months must drink at least 60 mls of water per day. Normally I give a little after their milk feed to keep the mouth clean and the balance when they wake up from their sleep when the mouth may be a bit dry.

After 6 months they need to drink about 150 - 200 mls per day. If they refuse to drink from the bottle, I will spoon feed them

From 12 months onwards I like to give them water from a straw cup as there is no spillage.

From 18 months they learn to drink directly from the cup. I start by giving them an empty cup to practice putting to the mouth and once they have mastered the technique, I put a little water into the cup and slowly increase the amount.

I like the western concept of allowing children to feed themselves from an early age. Most Chinese families do not allow the children to feed themselves until they are 4 - 5 years old because it is messy. What is a little mess to clean up compared to the joy of achievement on your child's face when he actually manages to eat by himself. When Marie started primary school I happened to pop into the school canteen during recess to pay the canteen fees and I was absolutely horrified to see several grandmas and maids sitting there feeding the 7 year old children because they did not know how to feed themselves.

I hope that you are like me in wanting your child to learn how to be self reliant from an early age.
