Top 10 Baby Shower Gifts

So you got a baby shower invitation in the mail. The first thing you say is "oh how nice", then you ask yourself "what am I going to give as a gift?" If you are one of them people that try and find the perfect gift always, it may be a little difficult. Parents have a better idea of what to get for new parents. However, sometimes people that don't have kids don't know what to get. Most parents have a baby registry, but often times they have everything on the registry that you don't know what to get. Below is a list of top ten things that you can get for a baby shower. Hopefully, you will find the perfect gift for the upcoming baby shower.

1- Bouncer Seat: A bouncer seat is a great item for newborns. The baby sits in the bouncer comfortably as the vibration of the seat soothes the baby. They often come with toys attached that sometimes light up or make music. It is great to soothe a baby and entertain a baby for a few months. Even though they do not use it for a very long time, it is a great gift that will get a lot of use.

2- Play Pen/ Play Yard: The way that play pens are made now is that they are very portable. It is very easy to just fold it up and take it anywhere. They are great for keeping a baby confined to a certain area while you are in the same room. They can take naps and play in there. A play pen is a great gift.

3- High Chair and/or Booster Seat: A high chair is great to use in the house, but sometimes some of them take up too much space. A booster seat is very portable. So it's easier to just pack up and take to grandma's house for dinner.

4- Car Seat: If the parents have a car you may want to get them a car seat. Tip: Try to find a car seat that is convertible and grows with the baby,

5- Carriage: Obviously the baby will need a carriage. So if you buy a carriage as a gift it definitely will not go unused.

6- Baby Swing: Swings are also a great soothing device for infants. They love the motion of the swing and they love to look at the mobile and listen to the music. A swing makes the baby very content.

7- Baby Bath: The first few months a baby will have to be bathed in a newborn/infant bath. Try to find the bath that will be the most secure for the baby.

8- Bedding: Depending on the theme of the nursery you can find very cute bedding to go along with it. (Extra fitted crib sheets are always awesome!!)

9- Mobile: The baby will love the music and watching the mobile in the crib.

10- Diaper Bag: Having a new baby, you will need to pack them their own bag. They require a lot of things on outings. Tip: Add some things that will be needed for the baby to the diaper bag. Such as lotions, baby powder, etc.

How to Encourage Your Baby to Crawl

Many babies learn to crawl between 4-10 months of age. If your baby is in the range, crawling should not be too far away. There are exceptions to that rule, though. Some babies never master crawling and instead going from sitting up to standing and then to walking. If your baby is one of these, congratulations!! Crawling is not required for all babies, but it is often times assumed that all babies have to crawl before they can walk.

Although you can't force your baby to crawl, there are certain things you can do to encourage them to take those first steps forward. The most important thing to encourage is tummy time. Lay a blanket on the floor and set your baby on his or her tummy for short periods of time. When your baby is younger, tummy time helps build their back and neck muscles so that they can hold their heads up by themselves and eventually sit up by themselves. As they get older, tummy time helps them increase their back muscles and arm muscles so that they can get into the position to crawl. If your baby despises tummy time, another way you can do it is by lying on your back on the floor and placing baby on top of your tummy facing you. This way they don't really feel like they are on the floor, but it gets the same results. Another thing you can do is buy a play mat/gym. These toys are filled with things to look at and do and will often times keep your baby occupied for a short period of time, while they are on their bellies.

10 Month Babies

Once your baby can get into the crawling position on their own, encourage them to start moving. Place a toy or food in front of them that is close enough to get their attention but far away enough that they can't reach out and grab it without moving. Doing this every day should get them going. Seeing your baby crawl for the first time is one of the greatest things you can see as a parent. When they are not crawling, you wish they were, but when they do, you'll wish they didn't.

When Can You Get a DNA Test During Pregnancy?

The DNA of the child has many clues as to what information the child will be born with. These clues can be uncovered and the information extracted by performing a DNA test during pregnancy. Advancement of technology has enabled to get a child's DNA tested even before the child is born.

A DNA test is done during pregnancy to test the DNA of the unborn child. Amongst the many reasons as to why a DNA test of the unborn child may be required is testing the paternity of the child. Other reasons include testing for abnormalities and inherited genetic diseases.

10 Month Babies

A DNA test of the unborn child can be done during pregnancy during the period between 10 to 24 weeks after conception. The method of sample collection is different for different ages of the developing baby.

When Can You Get a DNA Test During Pregnancy?

If your pregnancy is between 10 to 13 weeks after conception, the method used to collect the sample for DNA Testing is chorionic villus sampling. In this procedure your doctor will insert a thin needle or a fine tube guided by ultrasound, into the womb through the vagina and cervix to obtain a sample of chorionic villi. The sample obtained will then be tested and analyzed.

If you are between 14 to 24 weeks pregnant, the method used to collect the baby's sample will be by amniocentesis. This procedure also involves inserting a needle into the womb. In this procedure the needle will be guided by ultrasound and inserted though the abdomen to draw a small amount of amniotic fluid. The child's DNA Test will be done on this fluid sample.

If you are more then 24 weeks pregnant, the risk of damaging your unborn baby while collecting the sample for testing is significant. So, doctors advise to stay till your baby is born to get the test done. After the birth of your baby, several methods can be used to take a sample from the baby.

When your child's paternity is in doubt or when you want to be one hundred percent sure who the father of your child is, you can get the DNA Test done to confirm or negate any doubts you have.

If you are getting the DNA of your unborn baby tested solely for the purpose of establishing paternity, doctors do not encourage this test to be done before your child is born. This is because both the methods of sample collection pose some risk to the unborn baby. And if you wait till your baby is born, samples can be collected without any risks to the baby.

Even though you can get a DNA test done during your pregnancy, you should weigh the risks and the benefits before you decide to go on with your testing.

10 Questions To Ask Your OB-Gyn When You Are Trying To Conceive

When you and your partner make the decision that you are ready to start your family it can be a very exciting time in your life. First of all, you get to use baby-making as an excuse to rekindle some romance that may have slipped away with the daily routines of your lives. Second, the anticipation of a little one running around, while a bit scary, is invigorating. Finally, you're ready to join the mommy club.

You and your partner try month after month with no success. You're not worried yet because it has only been a few months. More than six months pass and you still are not pregnant. You start to become a little flustered. What do you do now? If you are under the age of 35, most doctors will tell you to try another six months before you consider alternative methods. Instead of just "trying" for twelve months, which can seem like forever when you want to conceive, I recommend talking with your doctor about some inexpensive initial fertility testing to rule out common problems, such as ovulation irregularities. However, if you are over age 35, then my advice is to talk with your doctor about fertility treatment options and the possibility of a referral to a Reproductive Endocrinologist (RE).

10 Month Babies

If you are new to the topic of infertility, you are probably not sure what to ask your doctor or where to look for resources or information. Below are ten important questions to ask your Ob/Gyn:

10 Questions To Ask Your OB-Gyn When You Are Trying To Conceive

1. Do they take a reproductive history to determine if you have any infertility risks such as endometriosis, fibroids, recurrent miscarriages, etc.?

2. If your doctor hasn't done preliminary fertility blood testing, ask for a full-range of tests to determine if you have any infertility risks. It is important to be aware that some of these tests must be done at certain times in your menstrual cycle. Ask your doctor to explain why she is doing the tests when she is, so that you can be certain that your doctor is performing the test at the appropriate time.

3. Do they perform a semen analysis on your husband/boyfriend/partner? For example, if your spouse has sperm issues there would be no reason for your Ob/Gyn to prescribe Clomid (a common drug to stimulate ovulation). The goal is to minimize the drugs to which your body is exposed, the expense, and the emotional ups and downs you may experience.

4. What advice does your doctor offer for life style changes? For example, dietary changes can help increase your fertility as can regular exercise. However, sometimes even diet and exercise are not enough to resolve your medical issues.

5. What medications do they recommend or procedures do they offer for your condition(s)?

6. How much experience does he/she have with helping patients overcome their fertility issues? This is an extremely important question, as you do not want to stay with an Ob/Gyn who "dabbles" in fertility treatments because it could cost you time as well as money.

7. Who within their office can help you understand your health insurance benefits so that you can maximize your coverage for the fertility testing and treatments?

8. If they suggest Clomid, how many cycles will they recommend before considering additional testing or more advanced medications or treatments?

9. If they offer artificial insemination, known as intra-uterine insemination (IUI), do they monitor the number of follicles you produce via ultrasound before the insemination procedure takes place? Monitoring the number of follicles will alert them/you of the risk of twins or a high-order (three or more babies) multiple pregnancy.

10. Which REs do they recommend if advanced procedures are required?

There are four main organizations dedicated to helping the infertile community gather information as well as provide support either through articles, chat groups, or peer-lead support groups. RESOLVE: The National Infertility Association was founded in 1974 and advocates for the community in many ways, including mandated insurance coverage initiatives (see RESOLVE's website for information on the Family Building Act of 2007). INCIID, the InterNational Council on Infertility Information Dissemination, Inc., was founded in 1995 to provide infertility information and support. INCIID hosts discussion forums on its website. The American Fertility Association was founded in 1999 and offers easy to read informational and educational content on their website. Finally, Fertility LifeLines is a new educational resource for the community and offers discount coupons for certain medications.

Two of the most effective methods for surviving your fertility journey are to gather information and ask questions. For most of you, your Ob/Gyn will be your first step in the information gathering process. I urge you not to waste the opportunity to both gain as much knowledge as possible from your Ob/Gyn and to know when it is time to move on and seek the assistant of a fertility specialist.

When Do Babies Get Teeth? The Question Every Parent Asks

When do babies get teeth? It seems like we are always anticipating the next baby milestone. After rolling over, sleeping through the night and sitting up, the next thing we anticipate is getting that first little pearly white!

When that first tooth should come in, is a common question of new parents and a somewhat difficult one to answer because the timing is different for every baby. There are certain guidelines however, and as long as your baby falls within them, there is no need for concern. Baby teeth do not always erupt in the same order either. Again, there is a general order, but your baby may decide to be different.

10 Month Babies

Altogether, there are 20 baby, or primary teeth. Usually, the first ones to come through are the two bottom middle teeth. These generally appear between 6 and 10 months of age, and are followed by the top two middle teeth and then the next two on either side.

When Do Babies Get Teeth? The Question Every Parent Asks

The eye teeth or cuspids generally appear between 16 and 22 months, but the first molars often appear before they do. Babies usually have their first molars by the age of 18 months. Second molars come last, and will not likely appear until after the age of two.

It is important to take good care of baby teeth as they are the foundation for healthy second teeth. Because baby teeth provide the space for secondary teeth, losing a baby tooth too soon can result in the second tooth coming in at an odd angle and may cause crowding of the adult teeth. Chewing difficulties and speech problems can sometimes result from early loss of baby teeth.

My best advice to new parents is to enjoy every day and every baby step along the way. While it is quite alright to wonder "when do babies get teeth?", don't let it worry you if your baby is a little slower than some others. Just relax and enjoy that toothless grin. It will be gone soon enough!

Baby Sign Language - Can My Baby Talk to Me?

Baby sign language is making parent's lives easier all over the world. Have you ever tried to soothe your crying baby and felt frustrated that you couldn't understand what she really wanted?

Well you're not alone. In fact, many parents feel the same way. It's difficult at times to know what your baby really wants, and it's not only frustrating to you, but it's frustrating for her as well when she can't communicate what she wants.
Baby sign language involves teaching your baby basic sign language that will help them to communicate their needs, but you may be wondering - can your baby really communicate in this way?

According to new studies, baby sign language is actually quite effective. It all got started with a researcher, Joseph Garcia, who spent some time studying how a baby communicated with his parents who were deaf. The 10-month old was able to communicate fairly well, even at that young age, with his parents. After observing how this worked, Garcia began to promote his sign language for parents who had normal hearing.

Believe it or not, most babies actually can pick up the baby sign language rather quickly. In fact, it's easier for babies to sign at a young age than it is to talk, since they have better control over their hands at an earlier age than they do the muscles in their mouth and tongue. You can actually start teaching babies sign language when they are about six months old, although some are starting even younger. Parents have been amazed at how quickly their babies picked up on the signs.

Teaching baby to sign takes away a lot of the frustration for babies. Instead of having to scream hoping that their parents will figure out the problem, it gives them the freedom to communicate what they need, which is a huge help to both of you.

Some parents are concerned that teaching their baby to sign is going to make them develop language skills at a slower rate. Well, according to studies, this is certainly not the case. In fact, studies show that babies that are taught to sign actually start speaking more quickly. Some signing babies even show a higher IQ later in life.

Baby sign language can be easily taught to your child. There are excellent classes available that can help you to work with your baby, although some parents choose to teach their baby to sign themselves. For parents who decide to do this at home, there are many helpful resources available. You will need a baby sign language chart and an instruction book. Flash cards with pictures are another useful tool.

If you are tired and frustrated at the lack of communication between you and your baby, then baby sign language may be a great choice for you.
